As we move deeper into the 21st century, this book intends to advance the practice and science of polygraphy by offering a different perspective. Rather than dismissing individual and situational variability as irrelevant “noise” to be controlled or ignored, it argues that such variability should be addressed through an adaptive approach to polygraph testing. Inspired in part by the growing influence of personal medicine—where interventions are tailored to the individual—this book proposes a flexible, case-sensitive framework responsive to each examinee’s unique psychological and situational context. Instead of forcing all subjects into rigid, standardized procedures, it advocates constructing tests deliberately adapted to individuals and circumstances. Coverage explores emotional and cognitive factors—particularly attention—in shaping polygraph outcomes beyond simple truth–deception distinctions. It shows how neglecting these factors may impair accuracy and, conversely, how addressing them can enhance it. Grounded in the Relevant Issue Gravity (RIG) theoretical framework, the book urges examiners to move beyond rigid protocols toward a flexible, analytically nuanced, and more effective approach—without compromising the test’s underlying rationale.
