Dewey and Hegel

This is the first volume of essays to explore the philosophical relationship between John Dewey and G.W.F. Hegel.T It examines how the thought of each philosopher illuminates the other, demonstrating the enduring relevance of both thinkers to contemporary philosophical debates. Rejecting the conventional view of Dewey’s development as a progression away from Hegelian Idealism, the essays instead engage in a dynamic dialogue between Dewey’s pragmatism and Hegel’s Idealism. The contributors cover a wide range of topics including habit, vulnerability, self-realization, ethical life, recognition, aesthetics, and metaphysics. By addressing themes such as naturalism, experimentalism, and the interplay between activity and passivity, they highlight the innovative ways in which Dewey appropriated and transformed Hegelian concepts. Dewey and Hegel: An Elective Affinity is an essential resource for researchers and graduate students interested in Hegel, Dewey, and the intersections of pragmatism and German Idealism.
