PENNY-GRABBERS!

PENNY-GRABBERS! is a complete guide to British comics, from their predecessor origins in 1777 to the end of the 20th century. By Eisner-award nominated author David Currie, the book combines a sequential list of all memorable comic titles along with concise analysis and hundreds of vintage comic covers. It covers all genres - boys'' comics (humour, adventure, war, football) girls'' comics (romance, gothic mysteries, pop), story-papers, digest titles, nursery comics and franchise editions produced in the UK (Disney, Marvel UK, toy, TV and film tie-ins). With original art images, creator interviews and examples of advertisements throughout the ages, Penny-Grabbers! is a cornucopia of visual nostalgia-inducing delights and a critical commentary of the societal changes that the comics themselves reflected. All of these comics were in a weekly battle for the pennies of their readers - From Comic Cuts to Beano to Eagle to Bunty to Commando to Buster to Misty to 2000 AD. There were victors and losers and custard pies galore... With a Foreword by Peter Hampson, the son of Frank Hampson, creator of Eagle and Dan Dare.
