Unlocking Growth: Determinants of Supply Chain Finance in African Markets

A technical and statistical report that provides a comprehensive analysis of the patterns, determinants, and potential of SCF in African markets, drawing on recent World Bank enterprise survey data across 31 countries (2020–2024), as well as firm-level financials from South African listed companies. It distinguishes between direct trade credit – the most prevalent and observable form of SCF – and intermediated SCF solutions like factoring and payables finance. The report further explores the evolving SCF landscape in Africa, including the role of fintech platforms, blockchain applications, and digital payment systems such as the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS). It identifies industrial parks and special economic zones as fertile ground for scaling SCF solutions, leveraging shared infrastructure and governance.
