Jon Porras has a rare ability to locate the pulse of a soundscape and draw out its emotional core. His work has long fed on the friction between organic forms and electronic processing, but with Achlys he moves further towards texture, erosion and weight. This music is steeped in breakdown - not as spectacle, but as a slow process. These pieces don't unfold, they accumulate. Guitar, sub-bass, modular synthesis and processed noise accumulate like sediment, layering into compositions that move more like weather systems than traditional songs. The album navigates through a succession of fragmented sonic vignettes: decaying environments, monumental silences and real as well as inner landscapes. The structure becomes permeable. Each piece hints at both presence and disappearance. Often several pieces were written in isolation and layered without synchronization, so that deliberate dissonances determined the resulting textures. This approach favors drift and friction, with melodies ghosting through hazy intervals, creating a tension between memory and distortion. The album opens with "Fields", where faint guitar phrases sink into hollow, resonant tones that seem more remembered than played. Warmth flickers at the edges, filtered and distant, like light pushing through soot. In "Holodiscus", elegiac lines drift over a gentle undercurrent of dissonance, quietly resisting the pull towards collapse. The title track glides between clarity and distortion, transforming harmonic fragments into a shimmering lattice of decay. Throughout the album, sustained tones stretch time into a blur, while processed guitar sounds emerge and disappear like echoes from neighboring rooms. Each piece carries an emotional imprint without providing direction, leaving textures that feel both tactile and restless. This duality of scale - immense and minute - infuses the album's sonic palette. In "Sea Storm," the deep sound bubbles and drags down, scattering guitar fragments. "Before the Rite" swells with abrasive density and distorted overtones - a moment of almost overwhelming intensity that just barely holds its balance. The sounds remain suspended and refuse to dissolve. Achlys moves through an area of shifting thresholds - where light and shadow, structure and erosion coexist without dissolving into opposites. Rather than aiming for a clear conclusion, the album offers a cyclical form of emergence and erosion. It is sonically dense yet expansive, emotionally resonant but detached from any narrative. Nothing here is fixed. Everything bears the trace of having once been something else. While some fragments fade and others linger, they all shape the atmosphere.
