Advancing Social Well-being in China

This book explores China's social construction framework, a policy domain focused on enhancing well-being through an inclusive model. It integrates government, social organisations, communities, and professionals to advance welfare and governance. Tracing its roots from ancient mutual aid traditions to its development post-reform and opening-up, the book draws on extensive fieldwork in Jiangsu Province. It examines community development in Suojin Village, the Amity Foundation's social enterprises, and the integration of the xinfang (petition) system with flexible governance. Key themes include the transition from narrow to broad welfare coverage and the shift from social management to governance. Practical policy recommendations address migrant children, vulnerable groups, and welfare provision, offering a uniquely Chinese perspective that invites comparison with East Asian welfare models. Essential for policymakers, practitioners, and scholars in social policy, public administration, Asian studies, and comparative welfare systems, this work provides valuable insights into China's innovative approaches to social construction and governance in the modern era.
