US-Speed/Thrash Commando „At War“ was founded in 1983 in Virginia Beach and achieved a certain kind of cult status with the release of their debut album “Ordered to kill” pretty fast.Even the US Music magazine “Spin” labeled them as an American answer to Motörhead !Paul Arnolds voice had this Cronos (Venom) and Peter Steele (Carnivore) vibe and there are parallels to their sound including a touch of Motörhead as well.They had a straight militant imagery. Bandname, cover, lyrics, live shows. Everything was based on the war topic which leads to total adoriation from their die hard fanbase on the one hand and absolute denegation on the other hand.Controversial songs like “Ilsa-She Wolf of the SS” contributed significantly to it.Especially that song has an impact on certain bands until today. It even inspired a pretty young east german band like Division Speed to do a cover of that song, which they still play live from time to time.The second album entitled “Retaliatory Strike” was produced by none other than Alex Perialas who helped bands like Overkill, Testament, Anthrax, Carnivore, Nuclear Assault and many more to earn worldwide success back in the heydays of the 80`ies thrash movement.After the release of “Retaliatory Strike”, which was a consequent development compared to the debut album, the band began to play more tours and parted ways with New Renaissance Records…
