Behind the Cloak Race, Identity and Harry Potter

BEHIND THE CLOAK invites readers to return to the world of Harry Potter with sharper eyes. For millions, the series was formative, shaping how we think about identity, belonging, and right and wrong. But what happens when we revisit these stories as adults, in a world more attuned to questions of bias, power, and belief? What do these books reveal not just about the Wizarding World, but about us? Written by Julian Wamble, creator of the Critical Magic Theory podcast and professor of the popular course Harry Potter and the Politics of Social Identity, this book blends cultural criticism with accessible insight. It uses Harry Potter as a gateway into urgent conversations about privilege, identity, and the stories that shape our worldview. This is not about cancelling a beloved series. It is about engaging with it more honestly and more thoughtfully. As the franchise continues to expand across new adaptations and cultural debate, BEHIND THE CLOAK meets readers where they are: nostalgic, conflicted, and curious. Whether you grew up with the series or are discovering it for the first time, this book offers a way to read with both imagination and intention. Inside, readers will find: A fresh lens on Hermione Granger and the plight of patriarchy; Tools for discussing information as control: Hogwarts, sorting, and surveillance; Strategies for sharing Harry Potter and its intersection with queerness and the politics of visibility. Timely and engaging, BEHIND THE CLOAK transforms a familiar story into an opportunity to reflect, question, and read with greater care.
