Beyond the Research

Conducting real life, large-scale, complex research in education is no mean feat – especially early in one’s career – but the case studies in this book demonstrate that it is possible when conducted by flexible researchers and guided by research experts. The collection showcases bold and innovative research by postgraduate scholars that goes beyond just doing the research. It frames research not just as an academic exercise, but an opportunity to develop problem-solving skills and manage complex situations and relationships. Focusing on unexpected turning points in research and emergent opportunities that lie outside of initial research designs, each chapter highlights the personal struggles, breakthroughs, and transformative lessons that shaped the authors’ academic paths. These scenarios include expanding theory into fieldwork, factoring neurodiversity into research planning, and coping with failed projects. Each chapter directly explains how commonly espoused qualities like rigour, tenacity and flexibility actually function in the lived reality of the research project and section introductions from veteran researchers go even further in drawing out the crucial lessons and themes.
