Ending Sexual Harassment and Assault in Trail and Ultrarunning Communities

Ending Sexual Harassment and Assault in Trail and Ultrarunning Communities examines how collective accountability can help prevention of sexual harassment and assault (SHSA) within trail running and other outdoor sports, while fostering communities built on a culture of safety, equity, and shared responsibility. Drawing on academic research, lived experience, and practice the book bridges theory and practice to demonstrate how meaningful change is possible and inspire action across trail and ultrarunning and outdoor sport communities. Grounded in action research, it explores participatory methodologies that help communities better understand challenges, engage diverse perspectives, and develop solutions that reflect their unique contexts. Through six interconnected chapters, readers will discover case studies from trail and ultrarunning communities, survivor-centered narratives, research-informed analyses, and examples of policies, practices, and frameworks that support cultural and organizational change. Together, these stories and evidence illuminate what it takes to create outdoor spaces where everyone can participate with dignity, safety, and belong. By weaving together research, storytelling, and practical tools, the book offers an actionable roadmap for creating trauma-informed, inclusive, and accountable outdoor sport communities. This book will appeal to runners, race directors, outdoor recreation professionals, advocates, and community leaders, as well as students, academics, and researchers in fields such as gender studies, sports studies, sociology, public policy, and cultural studies. Whether you are leading an organization, conducting research, or working to strengthen your local outdoor community, this book provides the knowledge and strategies to help turn shared values into lasting change.
