Games That Stay

This book explores how games give human relations playable form and how something a player did, felt, noticed, permitted, resisted, or repeated can remain available after the moment of action. Drawing together game studies, player-experience research, psychology, and design practice, the book examines how choices acquire personal stakes, mechanics reflect patterns of response, social worlds give actions relational history, and spaces, sounds, objects, and rituals gather emotional force. At the center of the book is the Self-Interpretive Trace Framework, an original synthesis connecting designed conditions, the player’s situated response, and a later act of interpretation. A self-interpretive trace forms when the player encounters some aspect of an earlier response again and uses it to question, compare, affirm, or reinterpret their participation in that situation. This shifts the design question from what a game is about to what becomes visible under pressure, who or what answers their actions, and what acquires enough history to be encountered again. Close analyses are paired with practical designer field kits for prototyping human questions, shaping aftermaths, and creating meaningful forms of return.
