Global History From Below

How can historians study the interplay between local and global contexts, exchanges and encounters in the modern era? This volume contributes to the field of global history by exploring the concept of “global history from below” and investigates global historical scales of analysis, the relation between micro and macro levels, and the diverse ways that global issues have been articulated on the local level. By introducing novel methodological and theoretical considerations, the volume investigates the relation between the global and the local over ten chapters and an introduction. The “global history from below” framework enables investigations into a wide range of themes such as Norwegian sugar refineries in the transatlantic trade system, humanitarianism in the Nigerian Civil War, opium smoking in the Far East, deindustrialization as experienced by workers, and trade unionism in Africa. The volume Global History from Below provides students, researchers and general readers with palpable case studies for discussing global dimensions of local contexts, encounters and exchanges in the modern era.
