Home, Place, and Space in Black Girls’ Education

This book documents and celebrates how Black girls experience and transform schooling. Bringing together leading and emerging scholars in Black girlhood studies, it centers Black girls’ voices to show how they navigate educational environments that are often restrictive while also creating spaces of belonging, care, and possibility. Bridging Black feminist thought and critical geographies of education, the volume introduces a compelling spatial lens for understanding how Black girls’ identities, learning, and well-being are shaped across homes, schools, communities, and digital worlds where learning unfolds. Through rich narratives, empirical research, and innovative theoretical insights, the book illuminates both the challenges Black girls face and the creative, agentic ways they resist and reimagine their education and their worlds. Written for educators, researchers, graduate students, and policymakers, this book not only advances scholarship on Black girls but also offers practical tools for creating affirming, equitable, and liberatory learning environments. By mapping the spatial dimensions of Black girlhood, it equips readers to rethink education itself—offering an attainable vision of learning spaces where Black girls are supported, seen, valued, and able to thrive.
