Hour Ghost Bridge Vinyl

The title of Ghost Bridge, the East-Coast-spanning chamber ensemble Hour’s fifth record, is less metaphorical than one might expect. Bandleader Michael Cormier-O’Leary repurposed it from an unrealized movie concept about a bridge that inexplicably starts disappearing. On the nearly-ten-minute title track of this richly imaginative suite of songs—-written for a 13-piece supergroup of an ensemble that includes woodwinds, strings, and vibraphone as well as a rock rhythm section—-Hour conjures up this central image with spectral string harmonics and free-time percussion gestures that rattle like tremors passing across the planks of a rope stepbridge. Against this eerie backdrop, Cormier-O’Leary cuts the figure of an ECM Records pianist-composer, contributing spare and poignant motifs. (Think Paul Bley on Open, To Love.) While writing the keyboard pieces that became the takeoff point for the album, Cormier-O’Leary also found himself reflecting on less fantastical kinds of disappearances: the loss of loved ones or even his own mortality. The six kaleidoscopic instrumental pieces on Ghost Bridge, though, feel more cosmically inquisitive than straightforwardly elegiac, sketching a progression from existential doubt toward a new dawn of understanding, punctuated by moments of fear, pain, relief, and acceptance.In delving into this thematic territory, Ghost Bridge forms a contrast with Hour’s art-rock-informed, more improvisatory early releases, representing a step further into the realm of intricate chamber orchestration. Known for his work with Friendship, Wendy Eisenberg, and 2nd Grade (among many other artists), Philly-based multi-instrumentalist and Dear Life Records founder Cormier-O’Leary has made Hour a home for increasingly cinematic instrumental compositions since the mid-2010s. The band mixes influences from baroque-pop experimentalists like Jim O’Rouke and Van Dyke Parks, post-rock progenitors like Dirty Three and Tortoise, and genre-flouting ensembles from Penguin Cafe Orchestra to the Carla Bley Band. Moving beyond their roots on the Philadelphia DIY scene, Hour has honed their unique sounds across crosscountry tours, ambitious residencies, gigs with comedian Joe Pera, and a live album celebrating the possibilities of their expansive touring unit (2025’s Subminiature). With dazzling, full-bodied production and engineering work by Lucas Knapp, Ghost Bridge delivers plenty of the live ensemble’s trademarks. Most importantly, there are cyclically developing guitar and keyboard melodies, expertly crafted and insistent enough to encourage the audience to join in and hum along. However, even more than on Hour’s last studio album (2024’s Ease the Work), unconventional harmonies and sophisticated counterpoint take center stage here. These nuanced and emotionally multifaceted compositions feel as rooted in contemporary classical and film soundtrack music as in indie rock.One of the most striking elements of Ghost Bridge is the more significant developmental role the orchestral instruments assume in each piece. These gestures were arranged with each of the group’s accomplished musicians in mind, whose bonafides come from DIY, jazz, and classical music: singer-songwriter Abi Reimold, multi-instrumentalist Jason Calhoun, Peter Gill (2nd Grade, Friendship), Adelyn Strei (Skullcrusher), Peter McLaughlin (Little Wings), Frank Meadows (Fust, Dear Life co-owner), and more. Instead of underscoring Cormier-O’Leary’s central hooks or contributing atmospheric gestures, there is a new mesmerizing level of detail to the group’s conversational interactions and kinetic energy. For instance, “Centralia” is a stately and idiosyncratic fugue, a collection of repeated and overlapping phrases stepping stone toward revelation that feels as boldly self-assured as anything Cormier-O’Leary has ever written. It demonstrates one of his favorite compositional techniques: layering phrases of varying lengths on top of each other, like tectonic plates shifting in and out of alignment, creating an echoing effect when one similar phrase trails off after another has ended. Ghost Bridge’s compositions are also full of unexpected pivots in harmony that unfailingly hold the listener’s attention, allowing the record’s catchy melodic motifs to sound reshaded every time they recur, like the color profile being inverted or discolored on an unchanging image. On “Pearls,” the chords modulate drastically around Cormier-O’Leary’s inviting central melody, in a way that emulates cuts in a film that is telling several parallel stories: disorienting but ultimately amounting to a piece of expansive storytelling.There is an unsettled, non-prescriptive quality to the chords on Ghost Bridge, with Cormier-O’Leary’s progressions avoiding firm grounding in either clearly sunny or melancholy tonalities.
