Inclusive Cities and Accessibility

Inclusive Cities and Accessibility: Case Studies from eThekwini, South Africa explores what it truly means to build cities that leave no one behind. Using eThekwini Municipality as a case study, this book examines how the design of cities, planning decisions, public policies, and social attitudes influence the daily experiences of people living with disabilities. Bringing together insights from urban planning, disability studies, sociology, and public policy, the book bridges research and practice to show how inclusive planning can transform lives. Rather than focusing only on the barriers, it offers practical solutions, examples of good practice, and recommendations for creating cities where accessibility is recognised not as a privilege, but as a fundamental human right. At its heart are the voices and lived experiences of people with disabilities, whose stories reveal both the challenges they face and the opportunities that exist to create more accessible, welcoming, and inclusive urban environments. This book will be valuable to urban planners, policymakers, local government officials, researchers, students, disability advocates, community organisations, and anyone committed to creating cities where every person regardless of ability can participate fully, live with dignity, and enjoy equal opportunities
