The album Transatlantic R. P.M. was released in 2010 to mark Incognito’s 30th anniversary and combines soul, jazz-funk, disco, and elegant pop influences across 16 tracks. Even the title draws a direct connection to vinyl: R. P.M. – “revolutions per minute” – refers to the rotation speed of records and, by extension, to the very vinyl records through which Incognito’s producer and musical mastermind, Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, first discovered his love for soul, funk, and jazz.For the reissue as a 2LP gatefold edition on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl, the name could hardly be more fitting.As the bandleader and creative driving force, Bluey has shaped the group’s distinctive sound for decades and is considered one of the key figures in the British jazz-funk and acid jazz scene. With Incognito, he developed a cosmopolitan style that had a decisive influence on the British jazz-funk scene and later became closely associated with the term “acid jazz.” Artists like Jamiroquai and the Brand New Heavies carried on this spirit—while Incognito themselves remained one of the genre’s most important constants for decades.Particularly impressive is the lineup of vocalists on the album *Transatlantic R. P.M.*: On Incognito’s version of the Boz Scaggs classic “Lowdown,” Italian soul singer Mario Biondi joins forces with soul legend Chaka Khan. Chaka Khan can also be heard on “The Song,” while Biondi once again lends his distinctive voice to “Can’t Get Enough.”Familiar Incognito voices also shape the album: Maysa lends her warm soulful touch to “Your Sun My Sky,” Joy Rose can be heard on “1975” and “All Of My Life,” among others; Vanessa Haynes takes on “Life Ain’t Nothing But A Good Thing”; and Tony Momrelle takes the mic on “Put A Little Lovin’ In Your Heart” and “Make Room For Love.”Other guests underscore the album’s transatlantic character. American soul singer and songwriter Leon Ware can be heard on “Line In The Sand,” Ursula Rucker leaves her mark on “Gotta” with her distinctive voice, and John-Christian Urich of Tortured Soul takes the lead vocals on “Let’s Fall In Love Again.”Musically, “Transatlantic R. P.M.” blends the soul and funk traditions of the 1970s with jazzy harmonies, Brazilian influences, strings, Rhodes piano, and Incognito’s signature horn arrangements.
