Kali Malone & Drew McDowall present Magnetism, their first collaborative album to be released on Ideologic Organ."Magnetism" marks the coming together of two unique artists in experimental music. Combining Drew McDowall's roots in the industrial avant-garde of Coil and Psychic TV with Kali Malone's foundation in contemporary organ composition, pure intonation and electro-acoustic music, it unites two generations in a deeply complementary partnership. On "Magnetism," Malone's poignant melodies manifest themselves in McDowall's signature timbral synthesis, forming a unified voice that resonates with clarity and vitality.Although the project was recorded in a matter of days, it was born out of a decade-long friendship, shaped by ongoing conversations about music and life, and years of guiding and supporting each other in their artistic practice and personal development. "We trust each other, our respective areas of expertise and our unique strengths," they say of the recording process. It was an experience full of intuition and confidence, which they attribute to their friendship. The album was created spontaneously in McDowall's Brooklyn studio, where the foundation of the music was formed almost instantly. The two decided to set certain limits to their improvisations: They programmed customized tunings on a monophonic modular synth patch and recorded the performance takes without overdubs. "Playing this music felt like singing, as I was freely following my inner voice," says Kali. Reaching for these melodies was again something that felt instinctive, like uncovering a long-forgotten memory. She continues, "I had kept many of these melodies inside me for so long." McDowall's synthesis approach uses Karplus-Strong synthesis, delay and distortion, which he shapes with an intuitive touch, elegantly transforming Malone's motifs. "The music is surprisingly accessible, although some of the timbres are extreme," says Drew, "it's not threatening or even opaque. We may even be playing with pop elements."After leaving the recordings untouched for a year, they returned to find the music transformed: "It felt like it had taken on an eerie, mystical quality." Driven by the allure of repetition, resonance and saturation, Magnetism pulsates as vibrant music that captivates the senses and lingers in the mind long after the last notes have faded.
