Little Monk Needs a Vacation

A little monk discovers that everyone needs a holiday in this touching and humorous tale.  “Enjoyment is an art form, important precisely during vacations or leisure time, to savor the moment, to take it in, rather than just ticking it off a list. . . . it’s all about this: finding your way to freedom, savoring life, experiencing it anew each day.”When the little monk hears a visitor describe the monastery as a prison, he is surprised, having never considered the restrictions of his wonderful life of prayerful reflection. But as he takes a day off to wander around town and enjoy the sights and an ice cream cone, he becomes paralyzed by decision making. He tentatively makes his choices and begins to ponder how freedom and responsibility are connected. As you journey with the little monk while he deepens his understanding of the Benedictine tradition, you’ll find thoughtful quotes, questions, and exercises that will encourage you to appreciate structure as well as independence. You’ll see how the gifts of discernment and self-care might be valuable in bringing balance and freedom to your daily life and help you learn to savor the small moments.
