Critics have claimed that the internet is flattening and homogenizing subculture, but whichever internet they’re referring to does not include Locked Club. Watch a video of one of their sets and you’ll quickly realize that something very different—and extremely unhinged—is going on in the post-Soviet rave scene before the FOMO punches you in the face. Locked Club’s debut PZDC LP drops 16 tracks of ceaselessly blistering industrial electro and techno punk from the irreverent, exhilaratingly wild underground of the other internet.Throughout PZDC, Locked Club constructs a world of distorted synths, severe bass, slapping breaks, pummeling kicks and warped, bizarre vocal samples from obscure Russian memes. These are tearout tracks, but there are moments in the eye of the storm where LC flexes their talent for melody and atmosphere before the beatings return. LC has the studio and mixing ability of a master, with distortion itself used as an instrument. Nothing is clipped; rather everything sizzles and flutters with harmonics. Those who have heard LC tracks on a club system know that they have some zero-day exploit for their bass processing. As one raver put it, “it feels like there’s a swarm of bees in my ribcage.”Notable is the number of collaborators joining Locked Club on the LP, including Boys Noize, Cardopusher, MC Marie, and Russian scene-mates RLGN, Hespermen and Any Act. Among the highlights are “VCIDFUTUR3” featuring Boys Noize, an EBM-inflected stomper with classic electro switch-ups, and “KLASS” featuring Cardopusher, delivering hard and haunted Giallo-Italo with strikingly sound-designed synth textures. Two tracks find LC experimenting in the Brazilian mode, “NAHUI” serving non-stop low-end pressure with sparse percussion, and the tweaked out, Volt break funk of “PIZDEC” with MC Marie on vocals. Locked Club’s sonic abilities are shown off on “YA EBAL” and “PHONE TROUBLE,” both of which push and mutate samples into incredible new timbres. The tempo rises as the tracklist reaches the end of this no-skip, no-filler LP, and every track is dancefloor-ready. The only question is if your dancefloor is ready.There isn’t quite any scene in the West comparable to that in Locked Club’s chaotic orbit, but it’s the perfect moment for their mosh pits and balaclavas (and clown wigs and bandages and chainmail) energy to spread outward. The kids are looking to 2008, they want the energy of guitars with the context of the rave, they want to go harder and they want spectacle and even cameras are appearing again in techno clubs. Locked Club aren’t a retro act or a revival of subcultures past, they are fully future-facing with a revolutionary sound to match. Their energy, however, is exactly what the ravers have been looking for. They were just looking on the wrong internet.
