Love

Thanatosis Records (Stockholm) and Corbett vs. Dempsey (Chicago) proudly present Love, the second album from the exploratory quartet Das B. Featuring Maya Magdas (piano), Mazen Kerbaj (trumpet), Mike Majowski (bass), and Tony Buck (drums), Love is an ambitious reimagining of John Coltrane’s legendary A Love Supreme—not as a conventional tribute, but as a radical structural interpretation. Available in strictly limited CD and LP editions, this release bridges the lineage of free jazz and contemporary improvisation in a way that is as reverent as it is inventive.Rather than revisiting A Love Supreme’s melodies, harmonies, or rhythms, Das B’s approach is akin to a “structural cover version.” Much like a film adaptation that takes its source material’s framework while reinventing its details, Love translates the architecture of Coltrane’s suite into an entirely new language. The quartet meticulously follows the timing, instrumental structure, and technical aspects of the original—balancing, panning, overdubs, and timbral relationships—while crafting a sonic experience that is uniquely their own.The result is a profound meditation on A Love Supreme’s spirit and structure rather than its sound. Each player brings their own avant-garde sensibilities, creating a work that stands in dialogue with Coltrane’s masterwork without mimicking it. The interplay of free improvisation, deep textural explorations, and an intense collaborative dynamic make Love a bridge between past and present, connecting the modal innovations of the 1960s to contemporary experimental music. With a devotion akin to Coltrane’s original intent—whether spiritual or musical—Das B’s Love presents an arresting reflection on one of jazz’s most iconic recordings. In this version, the source material is both present and absent, an echo that transforms into something new, thereby paying the highest tribute.
