Based on extensive archival evidence, the book shows how policymakers in the United States and France implemented policy to favor or undermine monopolies, and how later generations of policymakers would push those policies further or reverse them. Telling the story of past times when governments turned in favor of or against monopolies, the book indicates possible ways forward as these issues are debated today in the United States and Europe.
