Produktinformasjon

The Long Ear takes its title from Cold War intelligence slang for the parabolic microphone, a directional surveillance instrument capable of capturing sound from hundreds of feet away, used extensively by the CIA and KGB throughout the mid-twentieth century. On this record that same technology becomes a compositional instrument, its feedback loop turned inward, listening to itself. The name Noh Age draws from the classical Japanese theatrical form whose aesthetic of controlled restraint and deliberate movement the trio inverts — here, that same discipline meets the volatility of parabolic feedback, extended instrumental techniques, and the unpredictable agency of sound in an amplified room. The trio at the center of this record brings together three distinct instrumental lineages. John McCowen's work on contrabass clarinet draws from spectral music and electronically-generative traditions, developed through years of close collaboration with Roscoe Mitchell, and treats the instrument as an acoustic synthesizer: a resonant tube through which difference tones, beating harmonics, and multiphonics "conjure fierce noise, heavy drones and strange overtones" (The Wire). Li-Chin Li is a Taiwanese sheng soloist, composer, and improviser whose work explores the intersection of the instrument with electronics and contemporary performance. Formerly a member of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, she has since pursued a singular path through experimental and interdisciplinary music. Charmaine Lee is a New York-based composer, vocalist, and the founder of Kou Records, whose work delivers "the most visceral yet human performance" (The Wire). Producer Randall Dunn, whose credits span black metal, free jazz, and drone, contributes synths and his composition Cold Lake. The sheng is among the oldest polyphonic wind instruments still in active use, its free reeds producing simultaneous tones that have directly influenced the development of the Western harmonica, accordion, and reed organ. Placed against the extreme low-end of the contrabass clarinet and the feedback dynamics of a parabolic microphone, the result is a genuinely spectral ensemble of three instruments whose partials, overtones, and combination tones blur into a shared acoustic body.Several pieces on the record employ cellular automaton rules as compositional structure, in which each performer's cycle length updates each generation according to a simple rule applied to their neighbors' states. The system produces patterns that feel simultaneously mechanical and alive, an uncanny togetherness-and-separation that follows the logic of surveillance itself: everyone in the room, always aware of everyone else, each following their own determined path.“Loc Do” and “The Screemies” take their names from the 1956 Marvel Comics series Yellow Claw, a Cold War spy narrative of hidden identities, double agents, and empires concealed inside ordinary storefronts, whose hero Jimmy Woo was one of the earliest Asian American protagonists in comics. The cover art and the artist portrait are a special commission from Shintaro Kago, one of the defining figures of ero guro and the artist behind Flying Lotus's You're Dead!
