Operant Hermeneutics in Charismatic Preaching Word, Spirit, and Community

This book examines preaching within charismatic churches, specifically considering the interpretive practices and priorities of preachers. It introduces the idea of ‘operant hermeneutics’, the concept that preaching is an example of lived theological interpretation, and places interpretive practices in dialogue with formal and normative voices. Drawing on qualitative sermon analysis and in-depth interviews, the author provides a rich description of the operant and espoused practices of five preachers in the UK. The argument is that these preachers are attending to the Word, the Spirit and the Community in distinctively charismatic ways. Charismatic theology and practice provide a distinctive approach to interpretive and homiletic priorities, which challenges and nuances traditional Evangelical norms. The book uses empirical data to provide insights that both challenge traditional approaches and encourage critical reflection on contemporary practices. It will be relevant to those working in the field of practical theology, particularly with an interest in the study of Bible users, as well as scholars of the charismatic movement in Christianity.
