The Black Country area of the West Midlands has a rich historical heritage. The area was transformed into one of the most heavily industrialised areas in the country during the Industrial Revolution, famous for its coal mines, iron and steel works, brickworks, glass factories and other industries. The close-knit urban areas that grew up around these industries developed a distinct identity and cultural heritage that lives on today although many of the heavy industries are no longer active.
