Postcolonial and Decolonial Transformations

This first-of-its-kind collection brings British sociology into global conversations on postcolonialism and decolonisation, showcasing the transformative potential of post and decolonial theories for sociology and its subdisciplines. Over the past few years, universities in the UK and globally have faced increasing pressure from students to 'decolonise'. While these calls are rooted in a global tradition of anticolonial thought, British sociology has seen few institutional attempts to engage with post and decolonial theories, despite interventions by anticolonial scholars working in the UK. Exploring theoretical interventions, the implications of decolonising subfields and methodologies, and ways of rethinking the discipline through empirical cases, this collection reflects the diversity of post and decolonial thought and its significance for social theory and research. Contributors challenge sociology's complicity in imperialism and ongoing coloniality and racism within the discipline. Topics include forgotten British sociologies of decolonisation, the silence around Ireland in British sociology, scientific racism, knowledge production in Zimbabwe, Palestine and social theory, Sinophobia in the sociology of race and racism, post-secular theory, and antiracist approaches to teaching quantitative research methods. This collection is essential reading for undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers, and academics seeking to understand the importance of post and decolonial theories, ensuring the continuing relevance of British sociology as an agent of transformation within the academy.
