What happened to the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean in the wake of the European adventurers who claimed to have "discovered" them? While in some parts of the region they were decimated within a generation, others, such as the Kalinago of Dominica and the Lesser Antilles, resisted the onslaught. This book sheds new light on the Kalinago in the wake of European contact and exchange as well as the influence of African arrivals. In remarkable detail, it shows how they have shifted identities from the early years of resistance, through tactical retreat to the eventual revival of Kalinago tradition into the 21st century.
