Since its 1966 debut, Star Trek has inspired generations with its aspirational vision of a future defined by cooperation, curiosity, and radical inclusivity. This edited collection brings together international scholars from across the humanities and social sciences to explore how the franchise has shaped—and been shaped by—shifting cultural, political, technological, and ethical terrains over the past six decades.

Distinguished by its remarkable scope, the collection moves well beyond franchise histories or single-series analyses. Its chapters engage the full breadth of the Star Trek universe—its original series, spin-offs, reboots, and films—to trace how such foundational themes as representation, diplomacy, technological progress, and moral inquiry have evolved in response to changing social contexts. Contributors probe the franchise’s triumphs in imagining more just and diverse futures while also candidly examining the moments when Star Trek faltered, failed to challenge prevailing norms, or missed opportunities to advance pressing cultural conversations.

By documenting both the franchise’s influence and its limitations, Starfleet Log Entries offers scholars, fans, and general readers an essential resource for understanding how Star Trek became a cultural touchstone and how it continues to shape our collective imagination of the future.
