Ten Thousand Children Revised Edition

This collection of true first-person accounts brings to life the 1930s rescue of ten thousand children from Nazi-occupied territories to foster homes in England: the Kindertransport. Between December 1938 and September 1939, thousands of fearful families put their children on trains to escape Nazi-occupied countries and find safety in England from Hitler's cruelty and the coming war. Most of them would never see their children again. Dramatic, true first-person accounts paired with historical information frames the context of Nazism and war that led to the Kindertransport, an unprecedented rescue effort. The authors' primary research brings together documents, interviews and stories told by real-life Kinder from the oral history archives of Gratz College. Illustrated with more than a hundred authentic archival photos and personal documents from the era, robust backmatter including a timeline of the Holocaust and a map showing the route of the children's journeys brings history to life. An authors' note shares their personal experiences on the Kindertransport. "These moving tales of suffering and hope ought to be read by children as well as adults."—Elie Wiesel
