The Rise of Thana-Capitalism and Tourism

The book explores how capitalism has adapted to a state of constant danger and global risks, packaging disasters, mass death, and human sorrows as commodities for exchange, in an ever-changing and uncertain world. This book examines the emergence of ‘Thana-Capitalism’ as an evolutionary stage of risk society where the expansion of global trade and mobility has created a new stage of capitalism in which death is commoditized and consumed worldwide. Building on the first edition, this book offers a fresh, critical discussion on topics such as terrorism, the humanitarian crisis, the role of ICE in the United States, and the crisis of hospitality. It also unveils the lasting effects of COVID-19 and the War in the Middle East. This edition explores how media logic has turned disaster into a criterion for attraction and consumption, from dark tourism practices, which involve visiting sites of mass death and sorrow, to the cultural entertainment industry. The Rise of Thana-Capitalism and Tourism, 2nd Edition will be valuable for students, scientists, professionals, tourism researchers, and policymakers concerned with the future of global capitalism and the current ecological crisis.
