UNSUNG HEROES … AND A FEW VILLAINS

This book salutes an array of characters - lawyers, businessmen, soldiers, sailors, airmen, gamblers and clubmen - who merit more celebrity than they obtained during their lifetime, largely as a result of their personal modesty....with a couple of honourable exceptions. What flows from these pages are not just good stories about fine people, but a strong sense....of humanity and service. (Algy) also laments the passing of types that adorned our lives but, in a very different age, hardly now do so at all --Simon Heffer When Algy Cluff, the former proprietor of this paper, published his memoirs two years ago, I wrote that it was one of the few books I'd read which I wished longer. Unfortunately, his new work 'Unsung Heroes' is even shorter, but I warmly recommend it all the same. --Charles Moore, Spectator Algy Cluff, the former proprietor of The Spectator, has written a splendid book called 'Unsung Heroes' in which he describes some of the interesting characters he has known. One is Loopy Whitbread, a member of the Whitbread brewing dynasty who was removed from the company because of his habit of asking staff how much they were paid. When they told him, he would reply: 'Ridiculous. That should be doubled'. --Grant Tucker, The Times
