Urban Space in Transition

This book explores the transformation of Beijing’s Shichahai area over four decades, using this historic urban district to shed light on broader trends in Chinese urban development and the evolving interplay between state power, market forces, and social actors. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and long-term observation, it examines how developers, planners, preservation experts, local governments, residents, and consumers have shaped urban space. Rather than viewing urban transformation as a straightforward result of policy or capital, the book highlights the complex processes of collaboration, negotiation, conflict, and compromise that have redefined Shichahai’s physical and social landscape. Combining accessibility with analytical depth, it provides a compelling account of heritage preservation, redevelopment, community dynamics, and everyday urban life in transitional China. This study will appeal to scholars and students in urban sociology, urban studies, geography, Chinese studies, and heritage studies, as well as professionals and general readers interested in urban change, cultural heritage, and contemporary China.
