Vijay Iyer Solo Past Is Present Series Vinyl

"Solo" (2010) stands alone in Vijay Iyer's catalogue: his only solo piano recording, and a bold departure for an artist who had built his reputation on trio interplay. It arrived just a year after his ACT debut Historicity (2009), already his 14th album yet the one that triggered his international breakthrough: named Pop/Jazz Album of the Year by the New York Times, with his trio crowned Rising Star Jazz Group of the Year by DownBeat. Given the near-telepathic chemistry of that band, a solo turn was the last thing anyone expected. Working title Autoscopy hints at its premise – an attempt to view himself from the outside, tracing a lineage of influences from Monk and Ellington to Cecil Taylor and Sun Ra. The result is an album built on contrast. It opens with a hushed, unguarded reading of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" – to this day Iyer's most-streamed track – before pivoting sharply into the jagged angles of Monk and Clarke's "Epistrophy", and later into a searching take on the 1939 standard "Darn That Dream". Lyrical one moment, furious the next; minimal, then opulent – every track opens a new door into Iyer's musical cosmos, always straddling past and present. A milestone now rediscovered as part of past is present.
