My inspiration, los espacios creativos en mi espíritu, and my whole heart-mind journey have always been rooted in my family, my raw experiences, y los conjuntos y bandas sonoras de mi juventud. Because those cultural conversations weren't spoken or available to so many when I was growing up, I naturally spent my entire journey trying to make my family visible through my expression and art. Pero still, I never fit into that US baseline of individualism; it totally chocaba con la forma comunitaria en que me criaron. Cutting my teeth as Y La Bamba en 2007 meant navigating a generational crossfire and a neuro-complex mind through constant masking and code-switching. And though environments like that let my music grow, they never gave me what my soul was starving for: deep cultural empathy and connection. Then I wrote Ojos del Sol. It was a little message in a bottle thrown out to sea, waiting for someone to rescue me. It was found. Found by all of you."- Luz Elena Mendoza (from vinyl liner notes)
