Approaches to Art Therapy

The updated fourth edition of Approaches to Art Therapy introduces new insight on expanding areas in the field to bolster this classic resource for emerging and practicing art therapists. It continues to serve as a comprehensive resource on varied theoretical approaches and provides a variety of solutions to the challenge of translating theory to technique. In each chapter, the field's most eminent scholars define a specific theory or area of emphasis and orient readers on its relevance to art therapy. The fourth edition retains important and timeless contributions from the founders of art therapy as well as updates of many existing chapters. It also includes new chapters on contemporary approaches -- including somatic, systemic, and neuroscience-informed approaches -- examining diverse ways of understanding human distress and how to alleviate it. Case examples and over 100 illustrations of patient artwork vividly demonstrate technique in practice. Approaches to Art Therapy, 4th Edition, is an essential resource in the training of art therapists. It is also critical for the assembly of any clinician's theoretical and technical toolbox, as part of the formulation of each individual's own approach to art therapy.
