Take the amorphous keys of ‘18EDO Bailiff’, clunking somewhere in between the timbres of piano, tolling church bells, and plucky dulcimers. Each strike of the hammers detunes the notes just a little more, until they’re finally smashed up completely by the dusty jungle breakbeat of ‘Globecore Flats’, a thunderous bass uproar of skittish melody, clattering percussion, and yipping details.At the heart of all this ecstasy is intensely physical and imagistic sound design. Glossed in a contemplative shimmer, the intrepid cinematics of ‘Infinite Roller’ discover an underground oasis of glistening dewdrop harps and murky molten grooves, capturing smoke machines and strobes spewing out onstage. ‘Civilians’ is the embodiment of road rage, puffing out air like a fussy huffy pedestrian when everyone’s in their way, choosing to take their urgent gait down the much more optimistic scenic route of ‘In Patient’s Day Out’. The hurried fidgeting melody of ‘No Pills U’ pulsates into the monstrous tentacular electro of ‘Janus Modal’, with vintage paradisiac synths and a tinge of softly irradiated vocal harmonies like halflife leftovers from Sus Dog vibrating alongside swooping synth glides. Those vocals come back wholeheartedly in ‘Negation Loop’, a maelstrom of synthetic rigor where the bass rumbles and the treble does too.It’s hard to pull away from the Steep Stims, but Clark couldn’t keep himself from the rave any longer, and he made some of his most intense material yet.
