Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling

Motivational Interviewing in Clinical Mental Health Counselin A Practical Guide for Counselors, Educators, and Students (2nd edition) is a comprehensive guide to applying motivational interviewing (MI) across the full spectrum of clinical mental health counseling. The revised second edition combines the foundational principles of MI with practical strategies for addressing the diverse challenges encountered in contemporary clinical practice. Building on the strengths of the first edition, this substantially expanded second edition reflects the growing role of motivational interviewing throughout the counseling profession. Readers will learn how MI can be integrated into work with common mental health concerns, group counseling, couples and families, trauma-informed care, suicide prevention, clinical evaluation, multicultural counseling, supervision, professional development, and the creation of agency-wide MI cultures. Throughout the text, current research is translated into practical application through case studies, counseling examples, discussion questions, activities, and training resources that promote skill development and clinical competence. This text demonstrates how MI’s collaborative spirit and evidence-based strategies can enhance engagement, strengthen therapeutic relationships, and facilitate meaningful change across diverse clinical mental health settings. Designed for master's and doctoral counseling students, counselor educators, clinical supervisors, and practicing clinical mental health counselors, this text is appropriate as either a primary or supplemental resource in counseling skills, clinical mental health, practicum and internship, supervision, group counseling, and motivational interviewing courses.
