Produktinformasjon
This book examines the history of U.S. intelligence toward Poland through the lens of William J. Tonesk (1906–1992), a Polish-American officer who served the ONI, CIA, and State Department as an operations officer, analyst, and, above all, liaison. The narrative sits at the intersection of four fields: the bilateral history of U.S.-Polish relations; the diasporic experience of Polish Americans within the intelligence community; the social history of American intelligence as an emerging profession; and biography. Utilizing Tonesk’s private papers, state archives, and interviews, this microhistory demonstrates that liaison was not merely a job title, but a mode of being—a network-embedded role moving fluidly across military, civilian, and diplomatic worlds. Ultimately, Tonesk’s career exposes the structural paradox of ethnic service: inherently valued for linguistic expertise, yet systematically suspected of dual allegiance. It is essential reading for scholars of intelligence, Cold War diplomacy, Polish American Studies and for general readers interested in the hidden networks that shaped U.S. foreign policy.
