A remarkable account of the first thoroughbred, the Byerley Turk, the most remarkable horse in history. Foaled in the 1670s in the lavish Ottoman stables of the Topkapi Palace, this dark bay stallion was hard schooled in the disciplines of war in the march against Christendom. An Ottoman charger in 1683 at the Battle of Buda, he was seized by a young English officer, Captain Byerley. Three years later his proud owner rode him at the Battle of the Boyne. In 1791 James Weatherby traced back the ancestry of all thoroughbreds to this potent horse of war. His burial place in Yorkshire is unmarked - yet, on every racecourse in the world his blood thunders on.
