Case Studies in Performance Improvement A Handson Experience Using Tabletop RolePlay

This casebook brings the realities of organizational problem-solving to life through a fully immersive tabletop role-play experience that allows learners to practice—not just read about—performance improvement. Designed as a companion to Beyond Training and Development and grounded in decades of Human Performance Technology (HPT) scholarship, the book bridges theory and application by placing readers inside a realistic organizational storyline unfolding across interconnected cases. Following the journey of Apex, Inc., a fictional consumer products company, learners diagnose performance gaps, uncover root causes, design targeted interventions, and navigate organizational dynamics through scenarios that mirror the complexity of real consulting engagements. Each case follows a structured learning cycle: advance preparation, case story, guided analysis, role-play simulation, and reflective debrief. This experiential model transforms abstract HPT concepts into practical consulting skills. Written by leading experts in performance improvement, this casebook integrates role-play, gamification options, and facilitator resources to foster critical thinking, communication, and practical competence. Whether used in graduate courses, or corporate development programs, this hands-on resource equips emerging and experienced practitioners to apply HPT confidently in business, education, healthcare, government, and beyond.
