The edible grasshoppers, the aperitif diva! Let yourself be surprised by the delicate taste of edible grasshoppers, spiced by a touch of fruity curry! Our delicious grasshoppers come from European farms specialized in high-quality edible insect farming. Insect farming is a complex industry, that’s why we chose to partner with European producers using dehydration processes that conserve all grasshoppers’ nutritive and gustative properties. Unaltered, the edible grasshopper has a delicate hazelnut touch, which we subtly married with the exotic flavour of curry in our workshop in Miserey, in Normandy. And, at Jimini’s, as we like natural and healthy food, our recipes contain neither conservator nor artificial flavours! So, tonight for the aperitif, let’s have a grasshopper party! The grasshopper: a worldwide famous edible insect The edible grasshoppers are eaten in various regions like in Africa, Asia, Australia or on the Mediterranean coasts. Even if it seems exotic to most Europeans, entomophagy (the practice of eating insects) is wildly spread around the world: it is considered that a third of the world population eats insects regularly. With more than 1900 species, edible insects clearly give you some choice! You will most certainly find your pleasure tasting the most famous ones: crickets, mealworms, grasshoppers or even yellow scorpions (often considered as an insect, wrongly!), but some varieties are more impressive than others. One will think about the giant water bug, traditionally consumed in Thailand, which can measure up to 15cm, or even to the green grasshoppers that can easily measure more than 20cm... However, the size is not all, and much more often texture can surprise us: unlike the crispy grasshopper, bamboo worms and other palm trees worms, looking like rubber, are rather soft under your teeth, whereas beetles with their hard carapace are tricky to bite. Edible insects will offer you as many amazing culinary experiences as you could experience tasting food all over the world! Edible insects farming: from ecological benefits to nutritional ones The environmental benefits of insect farming are often highlighted, and it is well-deserved! Indeed, while traditional farming consumes alarming amounts of water, feed and space, the edible grasshopper is much more thrifty. He does not need much to thrive: 10 kg of food is enough to produce 8kg of insects when it only provides for 1kg of beef. What’s more, insect farming can arise 3 dimensions whereas it is quite difficult to imagine piling cows up to a farm’s ceiling! Another advantage: living insects reject almost no greenhouse gases, which is far from true as cows and sheep are concerned. Nutritive advantages are not to be forgotten too: the edible insect is often richer in proteins than traditional meat (for the same weight), which implies that quantities produced can be reduced, and thus, less natural resources will be needed! However, for these benefits to have a large-scale impact, we’ll have to wait for edible insect farming to spread in our western countries, which are huge meat-eaters. 10kg of food will then be enough to produce 8kg of insects instead of only 1kg of beef.
