Real Men Teach Reimagining the Future of Education

Real Men Teach interweaves historical and contemporary stories of men in education to illuminate the challenges of diversifying the teaching workforce and offers a blueprint for the future of education in America.  Real Men Teach: Reimagining the Future of Education is a groundbreaking work that not only diagnoses a critical issue in American education—the stark underrepresentation of male educators—but also proposes a dynamic pathway for change. Combining a rich exploration of history with a forward-looking strategy, Curtis Valentine’s book is set to ignite a movement aimed at reshaping the educational landscape. The book interweaves historical accounts with contemporary stories, beginning with the determination of men in America to educate themselves and their communities. Valentine highlights significant figures like John Chavis, Beverly Valentine, and William Valentine, and juxtaposes their struggles and triumphs with modern-day educators like Lawrence Carter, Charles Ogletree, and Carl Wade. This historical perspective lays the foundation for understanding the current challenges and opportunities in diversifying the teaching workforce. Valentine doesn’t just offer a retrospective look; Real Men Teach is a blueprint for the future. It outlines practical steps and strategies—including mentorship programs, financial incentives, and policy reforms—to recruit and retain male educators. The book emphasizes creating a school environment where these educators are not just present but are valued and integral to the educational experience.
